Wikipedia introduces Danny MacAskill as a “Scottish trials cyclist, from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.” But who is this legend really, and how did he become so popular? After doing some research I was able to pull together some info on the man who is perhaps the best known rider in the world. . .

On April 19th 2009, Danny released a mind boggling video for his sponsor - Inspired Bicycles. Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh Scotland, this video featured some of the most insane street riding ever seen. Thank’s to youtube, this 5 minute freestyle video, set to the tune of ‘The Funeral’ by Band of Horses wen’t absolutely viral. MacAskill’s outlandish, technical, and quite frankly dangerous freestyle tricks did not go un noticed by the big dogs either, soon after being picked up by the Red Bull Team. This partnership would ultimately Segway into one of the most successful freestyle athletic careers in history.

The video that made it all happen!

Another one of our favorites!

An interview with Danny from Inspired Bicycles:

How old are you and where are you from?

I'm 27 (getting old!) and I'm from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.

What is your day job?

I'm a professional bike rider - living the dream!

Apart from working and riding, what do you like to do?

At the moment I'm really into riding my trials motorbike and mountain biking. And watching videos of other people riding theirs!

Every top rider needs to be well fueled, what is your favourite food/drink?

My favourite drink is Red Bull and my favourite food is mince and potatoes.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Anything that isn't commercial pop music, but I really like stuff with a nice chilled vibe to it. I really like finding cool unknown bands.

What kind of film/TV show do you like?

I don't really watch much TV, but my favourite film would probably be Pulp Fiction or something like that. Classic.

How long have you been riding and how did you get into it?

Getting on for 15 years now. I got into it as a young lad, just doing skids and stunts around where I grew up.

Who are you favourite riders and why?

I'd have to say Akrigg is still up there as the greatest in my eyes. He just makes everything look so stylish and easy and can ride pretty much anything. Ali C is also one of my favourites. He's really pushing a different style of riding at the moment, really innovative and stylish. I love to watch him ride and get ideas for my own riding.

What would be your ideal day?

I'd get up on a sunny day, go out for a blast on my mountain bike with some friends, come back for some lunch and then go out on my trials motorbike in the afternoon with some more friends and then put some headphones in and head out for a street ride in the evening, just me and my bike, get some sweet lines and ride until I was running on empty. That actually sounds really good right now!

Where is the best place you have ever ridden in the UK/abroad?

In the UK I'd say Aviemore is where I've had the most fun on a bike. It's really fun and just such a beautiful place to ride. Abroad, I'd probably say the Expo area in Lisbon. It's really cool there.

What motivates you to ride?

What else would I do? Riding is just so much a part of me, it's just so easy-going and fun! I really enjoy just going out and playing. Whenever I'm on my bike I feel like a 13 year old kid again. That's all the motivation I'll ever need.

What are your favourite things about riding an Inspired?

I love the fact that I can just pick up my bike, ride the hell out of it all day, put it back in my hall and then do the same again the next day. It can take anything I throw at it and still comes back for more. It's super-reliable and super-fun, the ideal tool for the job!
